About Western Expansion
The Louisiana Purchase made by President Thomas Jefferson in 1803, nearly doubled the size of the United States. In 1840, approximately 7 million Americans (40% at that time) lived in the trans-Appalachian West. Many of these Americans believed in "manifest destiny" which was a belief that the United States had the right to expand into the West and claim that territory. In this westward territory, slavery was not allowed which caused many conflicts. The Missouri Compromise tried to resolve this issue and worked out a flexible plan. Overall, western expansion transformed the nation in many ways that will be explained more throughout this website.
