Today marks the first whole week we had been on the Oregon Trail! Mother said she would might make something extra special for tonight's meal to celebrate. I am really looking forward to it. All the walking we had already covered this morning seemed like years because I kept thinking of that special treat. Jimmy even smiled when he heard about it! That boy almost always has a scowl on his face for some reason, but I know he just wants to act all-grown-up to impress people.
Anyways, the land out here is amazing! The tall grass is like a lake of gold, shimmering and swaying in the light of the sun. There are these small animals that scurry and hide in the prairie grass. Father said that they are called "prairie dogs" but they look nothing like dogs! Deer prance in the grass and look blankly as our wagon jumbles by. A bunch of the travelers in our group actually hunted some of them for fun. I thought it was flat out wrong to harm an animal just for fun, but they wouldn't listened to me.
Last night we had a meal of beans and rice with a side of wild raspberries me and the other girls had picked from a nearby bush. They were so sweet they tasted like the candy we used to get in the shops in town. I probably had twenty of them! I gave some to Jimmy and he smiled and popped one in his mouth. He then began to throw them in the air and catch them in his mouth. Children from nearby wagons began to crowd around him and cheer him until Mrs. Johnson stomped over to us. She smacked him on the back of his head and scolded him "Quit playin' with your food! One week in the wilderness and you become a wild animal!" Me and my friend Jane keeled over with laughter. Jimmy's face was crimson with embarrassment!
I can't wait to see Chimney Rock! So many people had been talking about it's height saying that it reached the heavens. But I know that's just propaganda. The Rocky Mountains must be as beautiful and as magnificent as they are told. I hope these long months zip by!
